Would some one explain to me how the machine worked in the movie The Prestige.?!
Question: Was the contraption transporting the duplicate to another area, or was it transporting the original person and the duplicate was staying in the machine. The part where Hugh Jackman's character leaves a gun away from the machine and shoots the other Hugh Jackman, leads me to believe that the machine transports the original. That theory is also bolstered by the fact that he keeps trapping the person over and over in the water tank and killing him so he can enjoy the prestige. But, if thats the case, how do you explain the scene where they find all the hats in the woods? If it is transporting the original hat, how can there be more than one "original" hat there? I love the movie, but this always bugged me. Let me know what you guys think.

it practically a duplication machine which transported the duplicated item at a different spot. it's very hard to explain but i got it on the first time i saw i actually watched it 3 times this month. Actually your first statement seems to be right "contraption transporting the duplicate to another area,". in the hat part is the same thing it simply duplicated the hat and transported at the woods. same thing! the original never moved from the position, it just place the copied somewhere else. like hugh jackman when he stood there he fell in the tank and killed himself and his copied got all the glory.

how should i know
i believe it transports the duplicate because the original hugh jackman left the gun next to the machine to kill his duplicate who was created futher away from the machine. like with the hat and the cat im pretty sure it was the original that stayed in the machine. he also put he water tank as to kill of the duplicate so know one would find out and also to frame the other magician. something to show that it was the original was when he got shot and said to the other magicians brother that he didnt know the meaning of sacrifice implying he killed all his duplicates.

The original is transported elsewhere in case of the hats and cats. The duplicate remains in the machine. Also in the case of humans, that's why Hugh drowns the copies. How it's possible, ask Tesla. He did some things and then some.
