Sweeney Todd: did director Tim Burton adapt the gothic horror styles from the 60!

Question: Especially from the old british Hammer Horror in the middle of 60′s?

Did Tim Burton also learn alot from his favorite italian horror maestro MARIO BAVA? The Bava′s famous italian classic Giallo splatter were so called "CULTMOVIES" in the late 60s and in the middle of 70s

Gothic horror styles go much farther back than the Sixties. Check out the images in films from the German Expressionism period, such as "Nosferatu" and "The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari". They set patterns that were picked up by Universal horror films of the Thirties and Forties. These then influenced other filmmakers.

From what I've seen of Tim Burton's films, almost all of them are reminiscent of German Expressionism, especially the use of shadows and of odd angles, so that sets and even people look "out of kilter". I'd say he draws from the Silents more than anything else.

I suppose one would have to read interviews with Burton to verify which influences he actually called upon.

oh ja Burton admired the late Bava so much.

I personally have collected all classic Giallo Horrormovies on DVDs from the late Mario Bava, they are around 17 DVD - filmcollections I guess...

Bava was like our great papa italiano classical Giallo ! and I collected all DVD s from hammer horror too

I am a massive Hammer fan, and I wasn't consciously aware of a Hammer influence in Todd, although I know it's one of many influences on Burton's filmmaking in general.

Sleepy Hollow is generally regarded as an homage to Hammer horror, although I've never seen it.
