Well here is my take on it. Remember how he kept seeing Grady the waiter? Well Grady was also the caretaker that killed his family and himself. Jack had been there before too in a previous life(which explains the picture at the end of the movie). It's like their spirits seem to find their way back to the hotel.
Read the book - it makes more sense.
I always thought he died and became one of the ghosts at the hotel
