You will learn what a film IS. At first you might draw comparisons with other media, like painting, sculpture, music, writing, opera, plays, etc. This will help you see film as an art form.
You will study the formal aspects of color, sound, repetition, etc. and how they might help convey the message of the writing.
You will study the history so that you will be able to recognize movements, and trends. Realism, noir, propaganda, etc. This will help you in watching a film, understand some of the references to ideas outside the film.
Basically you should be taught how to form your own opinions on films without resorting to contrasts or saying it was, "good' or 'bad'.
If you like movies you will get a great deal out of this class. Your experience will be enhanced.

Different colleges offer different studies in the movie industry. You could take classes from film editing to producing to cinematography to directing to acting. The range is wide. I'd check out the colleges you like and see if they hold film classes.
By the way, I'm with you. I love movies and that's why I'm making them.
