Question: I don't think that they knew his blood was the cure. I think that the leader of the "pack" was more interested in retrieving the girl (the female mate) lying on the examination table. Robert, apparently, had been kidnapping one specimen after another to run tests on. He had all those photos of them on the wall.
Also, the creatures were supposed to be vampire-like zombies whose minds were crazed by the rabies-like virus and preyed on those humans that managed to survive to that point in time. They were blood-thirsty.

I guess they didn't care because they were so hungry, and probably couldn't sense that his blood was the cure.

Honestly, they were just acting on instict.. just as any ravenous animal would. If they smelled the blood they aren't going to turn it down and be like, "Oh he's got the cure! We'll just move along." You know?
because they didnt know or understand and you have to remember, when they mutated their minds triggered and their thought-process wasnt like before, so they were basically angry, violent, blood-hungry the whole time...
They weren't. The main zombie dude was hunting him because Robert captured the female. He decided to hunt him for revenge.
Robert was hunting them. Part of it was self preservation on their part. The blood that was the cure was not his, it was the female "night hunter" as she had reacted well to the # 7 formula that he had injected in her.
One other theory is that she was the mate of the leader of the infected. Not sure if that's true for sure as the movie differs greatly from the book.
