Cloverfield, the jury is still out on.

2001 is also unforgettable

Forbidden Planet. Gave us Robby the Robot.

Guess it depends on your definition. Some people would say Star Wars, because of the deep impact it had on the film industry, while others will point out that it's basically a western set in space, there's very little actual "science" to the fiction.

Others suggest 2001, but again, this is less "science" and more "philosophy of science." and Alien, some people claim, is a horror film.

That leaves, in my opinion, the original Star Trek. But don't get me wrong-- all of the above are really great films.

The Last Starfighter. :)

Star Wars, Close Encounters, and Planet of the Apes..........All classics!

For Sci-Fi I would agree with Alien and 2001 ... I don't know if Close Encounters would work in that category or not. Personally I thought War Of The Worlds was horrible. You could probably add Star Trek in this category also.

For Sci-Fantasy ... The Star Wars saga ... hands down winner because nothing else comes close and nothing ever will.

Soylent Green - a 1973 dystopian science fiction movie depicting a bleak future in which overpopulation, global warming, and the resulting severe damage to the ecology have led to widespread unemployment and poverty. Real fruit, vegetables, and meat are rare, expensive commodities; much of the population survives on processed food rations, including small wafers named "soylent green".

The film overlays the genres of science fiction and the police procedural as it depicts the efforts of New York City police detective Robert Thorn (Charlton Heston) and elderly police researcher Sol Roth (Edward G. Robinson) to investigate the brutal murder of a wealthy businessman named William R. Simonson (Joseph Cotten). Thorn and Roth uncover clues which suggest that it is more than a burglary attempt gone bad. The film is loosely based upon the 1966 science fiction novel Make Room! Make Room!, by Harry Harrison.

"Blade Runner"
Tarkovsky's "Stalker"
"Brazil"

That's a difficult question. I would be hard-pressed to pick between "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Blade Runner", and "Metropolis".

Your examples are also classic, and depending on one's particular bias, cases could also be made for Tarkovsky's "Solaris" and "Stalker", Gilliam's "Brazil", and the populist vote-getters "The Matrix", "Star Wars", and "Terminator 2".

Armageddon
the Chronicles of riddick
pitch black
the 5th element
demolition man

Star Wars because movie making was changed forever by it.

I'll throw in my lot with The Day the Earth Caught Fire(1961). It has a global warming reference, among its many qualities.

E.T. ... that little Alien was so darned cute that everyone wanted one...
