in Odessea (not sure of spelling) of Homer, Ulysses meets up with a bunch of mermaids of amazingly beautiful voices. and anyone that hears those voices couldn't hold himself from wanting to be with them. and the sirenas (serenas) would eat that sailor...

in philippine folklore, 'sirena' means mermaid.
