As long as you own the DVD and are using it for personal use to copy from the disk to your ipod, then you are covered by copyright law. You can put the entire movie on ipod if you want--just as long as you don't trade, transfer to another person, or sell it. Then it becomes copyright infringement.
If you own the DVD then yes. If you are downloading it from online or something then it is illegal.
