Definitely original Star Wars. Lord of the Rings was great, but it simply hasn't given birth to the same cultural phenomenon as Star Wars has.
Plus, Lord of the Rings is based on novels... nothing wrong with that, but Star Wars brought something brand new to the table.
And I think, as a whole, Star Wars has just got a stronger story, characters, etc... It doesn't need fancy special effects to have the same effect on audiences.

Lord of the Rings - Star Wars is really pretty derivative if you look into the sources.
I have varying opinions. Movie wise I would select Star Wars. However when it comes to the book form I would select LOTR. The world of Middle-earth is better in book form then novelizations of the Star Wars movies.
