i think its more a war movie (then again i dont watch many war movies) with some drama and subliminal messages. my boyfriend thinks its very much a drama (but then again he watches many war movies).
so lets say both. you do have to think a little bit, but if you like francis ford copolla, youll enjoy it very much.
his new film is coming out soon, im excited, if you like this movie, you should start watching more of his stuff.

A drama.
It has action but only in the beginning fifth of the film. The rest is drama ... oh and it has a good storyline too but don't take it from me, I haven't sold my book yet.
P.S. You should go on imdb.com and check out the film's rating and reviews to read up on other people's more detailed opinion of it (although sometimes you'll just have people talking about film formulas, cinematography etc.). Don't waist your time with us simpletons
It is an adaptation of Heart of Darkness set in Vietnam. Drama. And a good, but drawn out, one.

I love the Deer Hunter, one of my favorites, but I couldn't sit through Apocalypse Now, found it very boring. And its more of a war movie than The Deer Hunter.

The movie makes a political statement against war in general, which makes it more a drama rather than simply another war movie. It is simply set in the Viet Nam era, but it could be placed in ANY war setting, anywhere. War (any war) causes people to go crazy and do crazy things and deprives us all of our humanity. If you want a war movie, try Saving Private Ryan, a mostly accurate, real war movie with a message.
