I Am Legend - is it just a remake of the Omega Man?!

Question: I was really keen on watching I Am Legend, couldn't wait - then I saw the opening scene. Will Smith driving through the silent city in his red convertible.

Just the same as Charlton Heston in the Omega Man.

If you've seen both - how do they compare?

Is it a remake, or are there differences?

Should I buy it, or wait for it to come on Sky??

UGH! I am legend is one of my favorite books ever. To say I am Legend is just a remake of Omega Man is the understatement of the century.
The book, Written By Richard Matheson (who also wrote Somewhere in time and Duel and a host of other really fabulous stuff) is amazing. It's basically about the last man on earth, and he is the last man because a virus has turned everyone else into mindless vampires - or so he thinks. Buy this book and read it.
In the fifties or sixties, they made a verbatim remark with Vincent Price which is very boring, because basically it's a guy ina room all alone thinking stuff until he meets the girl in the field. Yet, it's an interesting premise.
Omega man was the sixtied version and Matheson is accredited as the "Based on" guy, but the movie had (like most sixtied movies) NOTHING to do with the book or original movie. Oh, except he was the last guy on earth and everyone else hd a disease.
The most recent incarnation tries to be fairly faithful to the book, but the end is different. And it's the end of the original stories that gives it the name. I heartily encourage everyone to read Matheson, who also did "What Dreams May Come" An amazing book, but terrible movie. A lot of his work has been made into movies, so if you want to do a "Movies based on books" night with yoru friends, he's a great resource.

Yeah its a remake
there was another one called "the last man on earth" aswell
Its a good movie

Yes, it is a reenvisioning of both Omega Man and Last Man on Earth. It is very similar to both movies, but set in a modernistic world. I love the old Vincent Price classic LMoE and I thought I Am Legend did a pretty good job of sticking with the original story. I would wait and rent/ondemnd it instead of purchasing it though, unless you love Will smith.

Yes "I am Legend' is a re-telling of "Omega Man" which is a re-telling of "Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price. It actually more closely follows the Vincent Price version (which is in black and white). I am careful not to say remake because all three movies are supposed to be fresh attempts at the same story. Personally I loved the Vincent Price version, but to be fair Will is easy on the eyes!

I am legend is one of the most boring movies ever made. Not good at all. Will Smith is one of my favorite actors, but this movies special effects look like my 9 year old daughter did them as a home work assignment.

yes it is...

not at good..but still entertaining and different in a way!

They are both adapted from the 1954 book "I am Legend".

I believe the new one captures the book's mood better, but in essence they are the same sort of story line.

I believe you should see "I am Legend" as the effects and sounds are better than they were back in 1971.

yes it is a remake. i have not seen both but my fiance has and thinks the second one is brilliant but also enjoyed the first one a lot too. i thought it was brilliant although i had nothing to compare it with

yeah. but i knew that before i watched. and i knew itd be a poor imitation.
i only watched it for will smith. if you dont like him, then theres no real point in getting it. but he IS really good in it.

It's not precisely a remake, rather they were both adapted from the same source material, the story "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson.

Both would probably be worth watching.

which leg end is it
hip or ankle?

DO NOT BUY IT!!!!it is a waste of your money it is not worth the effert to even put it in the DVD player stop now if your going to wal-mart use your money for something good or usefull.

Anthony D. is 100% right. Give him best answer. The Graphics look like a bad version of "The Mummy" special effects. Seriously. The movie is SO BAD.

remake

I am Legend is based on a book by Richard Matherson. It was written in 1954 and has been made into a film 3 times:

1964 - Last Man of Earth (Vincent Price). This is suppose to the film that sticks closest to the books plot.
1971 - The Omega Man (Charlton Heston)
2007 I Am Legend (Will Smith).

The film has been floating around for a while now, originally it was due to be shot by Ridley Scott staring Arnold Schwarzenegger and this was back in 1997.

Richard Matherson wrote a number of books/stories that have been turned into films:

What Dreams May Come ( 1998 -Robin Williams)
Stir of Echoes (1999 - Kevin Bacon)
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
The Box (2008 - Cameron Diaz)

He is also responsible for writing the story that went on to make the most famous Twilight Zone episode Nightmare at 20,000 Feet - which is the one about the Gremlins on a plane (later parodied by the Simpsons)

i've only seen Omega Man which was a great movie, i'm sure I Am Legend will be the same
