Old movie about religion vs. creationism in the 1940s-1950s?!

Question: I'm trying to remember what this movie is called. I saw it in grade school. The teacher played it for all of us to watch. It was about a science teacher who taught evolution in schools and the whole town ganged up on him and accused him of being anti-Christianity. He went to trial and it was a landmark case. It was based on a true story. What movie am I thinking of?

There are several versions of this. To me, the b&w original is the best.
Inherit the Wind (1960)
starring Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, Gene Kelly, Dick York (of "Bewitched"), Claude Akins, Harry Morgan, Florence Eldridge (March's real-life wife plays his wife in this film.)
IMDB synopsis:
Teacher Bertram T. Cates is arrested for teaching Darwin's theories. Famous lawyer Henry Drummond defends him; fundamentalist politician Matthew Brady prosecutes. The film is based on the 1925 "Scopes Monkey Trial" with debates between Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan taken largely from the transcripts.

Other versions are:
Inherit the Wind (1999 TV movie)~Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Beau Bridges, Tom Everett Scott, Lane Smith, Piper Laurie

Inherit the Wind (1988 TV movie)~Kirk Douglas, Jason Robards, Darren McGavin, Megan Follows, Kyle Secor, John Harkins, Jean Simmons, Michael Ensign

Inherit the Wind (1965 TV movie)~Melvyn Douglas, Ed Begley, Sr., Diane Baker, Dick York (reprising his film role)

Inherit the Wind.

See original that you mention, not the remake with Jack Lemmon and George C Scott (although this is taken word for word from the original).

Original with the superb Spencer Tracey and Fredrick March -- watch the charismatic exchange of views from the witness box; one of the great moments of all cinema.

Quotation: those who sow the wind shall inherit the whirlwind.

As others have said, it's "Inherit the Wind."

It's a great movie, but it doesn't really reflect the actual facts of the case. It was far less of an inspiring story in real life... mostly because the whole thing was essentially an elaborate publicity stunt. And the Spencer Tracy character is a conglomerate of about 3 different people in the real case.

It was "Inherit the Wind", and I think you mean "religion vs. evolution". It was a dumb movie because it didn't follow the actual court transcript very well, and it was designed to make the religious people look dumb. It was just a piece of propaganda.

Inherit the Wind with Spencer Tracy. It's a very good film.
