yup- as they're heading for the Witch of the West. If you look at the Tin Man, he's got a huge pipe wrench to go with his axe. Kinda funny, I thought.
Yes, they were getting ready to battle the Wicked Witch, and so were arming themselves. Where he got the pistol, I'll never know!
That might well be a publicity photo that wasn't used in the movie - - do you remember when the Wicked Witch and her troops are approaching the trapped group just before they drench her with a bucket of water? Maybe it happened that he could have fired it just then. . .

Just a mistake in the writing synapse. Off the fight the witch arming themselves but the mistake being d'oh where did he get that from? Oh well... writers aren't perfect. lol
i never realized that you only hear people talking about the o called munchkin hanging, when it was really a large bird of paradise,
figures, they give the one with no brain a gun.........
