In Star Wars, what does it mean "The Old Republic"?!

First things first ... in the Star Wars time line it doesn't actually become the "Old Republic" until the Empire is defeated and a "New Republic" is declared across the galaxy ... until then "history" books just call it the Republic.
The "Republic" spans a time period of over 5000 years before the events of ep 1. It started out small and, in most respects, simple. There were pockets of life in different parts of the galaxy that really didn't know anything about each other because they didn't know the other places existed. If you want to get really "out there" you could almost say that we, humans, are in the same boat right now, speaking in "galactic terms", as they were back then. Yeah, I actually am serious in a weird way. We are making our first reaches into the heavens trying to learn more about the solar system we live in and the galaxy as a whole. This process is in its "infant" stages when taken as a whole but each time we venture out there we learn more and more about how things work. Right now we are kind of at our limits as to what we can do and how far we can go because without the ability to travel at speeds greater than the speed of light there really aren't many places that are within our reach at the moment. Given enough time I have no doubts that we will achieve this one goal, faster than light travel, and when we do ... well, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Anyways, back to Star Wars ... sorry for the ramble. As more and more "beings" learned how to travel faster than the speed of light it was no surprise that they found other planets with intelligent life. They would work together to achieve more abilities that made space travel easier and in doing that they found more and more forms of "intelligent" life and slowly but surely the Republic took shape as a central "government" for the good of all species and types of life. The Republic became larger and larger as more and more "Alien" societies were found and taken in by the Republic. It was a mentality of "one for all and all for one" and it kept the Republic growing in size and respect until it had encompassed almost the entire galaxy. As prosperity came to the people they started to become greedy ... wanting more and more for themselves and screw the rest of the galaxy. In the end the Republic died the same way many of the great forms of government here on Earth did ... from the inside out. To attack these governments with a frontal assault would be less than useless because it would be smashed faster than you can blink ... The Republic was felled by its own greed and disregard for others in the way ... always from the inside. Again, a parallel can be drawn to something in "real" life as we know it ... just look to Washington DC and the current leadership of the US ... it's pretty scary how closely they mimic each other.
In the end Palpatine defeated the Republic from within and created his Galactic Empire with him as Emperor. When Palpatine and Vader were finally defeated it was still another 5 years before the Rebellion would take Coruscant, driving the Empire from it, and declare a "New Republic" from the ashes of the Empire. If you have a "New Republic" then it only goes to reason that there should be an "Old" republic so "Old" was added to Republic to produce the "Old Republic".

The Old Republic was named so because it was the style of government before Palpetine became Emporer and formed the Empire.

no because i think it is a time before episode 1 where the sith rule. the equivalent of new democratic is the new republic.
