It depends how serious your club is. Personally, I think it would be a perfect opportunity to watch Mel Brooks' History of the World, Part I. History buffs might get a kick out of the parodies. (92 minutes)

If you want to go serious, there are a lot of great and mostly historically accurate films. It all depends on what the club focuses on. What time period have you been discussing lately? What part of the world are you particularly interested in? Do you want a movie about a particular event, or a fictional film based in a certain time period? Can you show any movie, or are some things, like nudity and offensive language, not allowed? I think it would be best if you answered these questions first, and then considered what movies would fit that criteria.

However, I can suggest a few history-related films that are around the right length: Hotel Rwanda which shows the Rwandan genocide (114 minutes), Elizabeth depicting the life of Elizabeth I (124 minutes), The 300 Spartans depicting the life of King Leonides (108 minutes - note this is NOT 300, which is great but not exactly concerned with the historical events), and The Last of the Mohicans showing the French and Indian War (117 minutes).

300

This movie is incredible

300

"Amistad"

300 is not even historical ask anyone and they'll tell you it's mostly made up

I would go with a war movie
Flags of Our Fathers is a descent movie the book is better, Black Hawk Down is real good, so is Pearl Harbor .. those are my favorites

here's an amazon list

I'm not sure about how long it is but I would recommend "Remember the Titans." It tells about segregation and the disrespect that whites had against the colored.

How about Glory, its a movie about the 51st regiment (I think), which was an all black regimen in the civil war. It's a pretty good movie, and opens alot up for discussion afterwards. Defenitely one of the best history movies made, it focuses more on the history than war. Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman; are just ust a few of the biggies in the movie.

How about the PBS movies "1900 house" "1940s house" The best are "colonial house" and "frontier house" but those are two disks. They take people and put them back in time in every way, in front of the camera. You can learn alot and ask alot of questions, like... would you be able to do this?

hm.

Hotel Rwanda
Elizabeth or Elizabeth: the Golden Age
Becoming Jane
The Patriot
The Longest Day
Pearl Harbor
Schindler's List

dunno how long they are though.

well,Forest Gump kinda makes loads of references on modern history... but dont think it can be considered as a historic movie. what about
'Hitler'?
Schinler's List-its brilliant
'elizabeth or elizabeth:the golden age'?(though i think its boring)
Timeline?
Attila the Hunn?
Troy(eventhough it has a lot of loopholes)T
he Gladiator?

it depends if you want them to be completely based on real events or just to have reference to a certain historical period?

Two shorter movies might make good viewing for your club if you're interested in how films can convey a powerful propaganda message that can change history. Both should be available in your local library so they are free!

The first suggestion is Leni Riefenstahl's 1934 film promoting Hitler titled "Triumph of the Will" -- a truly terrifying glimpse of how propaganda can help motivate a nation to seek evil ends through war (i.e., Germany, WWII and the Holocaust, respectively).

I'll send my second suggestion in a few minutes once I've checked its exact name so you can find it easily in the library.

P.S. - The other suggested film, "300," is, as stated by the poster, very "cool" --- and there is some basis for some of the people and parts of the events presented in historical records. But to call this comic-book evocation of an actual ancient battle "history" is more than a stretch. It's also very violent and sexist in parts, but what top-selling action movie with high popularity among teens can claim not to be so? (Anyone have an example of a top teen action movie
over $100MM box office that isn't at least violent?)

depends how far back...if you're thinking the 1500s or so, Luther would be a great choice. Possibly Troy or Alexander the Great for farther back. Ben Hur would definately be a good idea. It was one of the top 100 movies of all time, and historical to boot. Not sure if they're under two hours. I don't remember. Hope this helps.

INDIANNA JONES!!

"A Man For All Seasons", starring Paul Schofield. a brilliant movie based on a sellout Shaffer play about Sir Thomas More and King Henry VIII.
"Anne of the Thousand Days", starring Richard Burton and Genevieve Bujold. Henry VIII again.Burton sizzles!
"Rob Roy", starring Liam Neeson.

If its under 2 hours then I can't help, sorry. Most of these movies are 2 hours or longer.
