The movie Magnolia?!

Question: I rarely see movies which I feel that I completly understand. Magnolia (and American Beauty) is one of those movies (both came out in 99, good year). Anyway, the only thing I seemed to have missed was the title. I can possibly see a vague flower reference, due to the fact that as the movie progresses (and as the characters truely understand life and god) they develop and bloom, so to speak. But why Magnolia specifically? Is thier something special about this particular flower that I dont know?

the director/writer said he came up with the title first and then started working on the screeenplay. he said it sort of "blossomed" from there. sounds corny right? here's a link which includes some more information you may find interesting.

well maybe it means that life unfolds like a flower but otherwise i'm not sure

Is it about the flower or the colour which is a bland shade that gets painted on alot of walls?? I don't know - I'm probably talking shite but I did like the film.
