Because the Japanese are used to fighting evil spirits behind closed doors, they aren't used to dealing with big trouble-makers in public... and war also boosts economy :)

Otherwise the movie wouldn't have lasted ninety minutes.

People don't think when they're scared.

The movie was really a metaphor for the dangers of Nuclear Weapons. Radiation created Godzilla, it was the sum of all of their fears about the bomb and fallout.

The reason they could only try to fight Godzilla with more power, was that nuclear weapons and radiation cannot be defeated. As men, we have created something that will destroy us.

if there was someone you know and he kept attack you and deystroying things of yours wouldnt you want to attack him sometime.

if you saw some big hairy beast kinda monsterous thing walking down the sidewalk wouldnt you be scared.

when you are scaed you want to not be scared so you fight to not be scared.

i know godzilla isnt hairy but it is the point of the monster and the deystruction of things you own you are to japanese peeps as your stuff is japan
