Ok...let's see here....
1. Coach Dale has to gain the trust of his players and the town. More importantly he has a bit of a hard time trusting himself after an incident with a subordinant in the Navy. He also has to learn to trust someone who is less than reliable (Dennis Hopper)

2. Miss Fleener is someone who feels safe with the town and the school the way it is. She is a bit leery of Coach Dale because she thinks he doesn't understand the people of this small community.

3. That team (like the basketball team here on the reservation) is a way out for many of those kids. It gives the people of that town something to believe in as a whole. They have something to look forward to with that team. The team is more than just a form of entertainment; they represent the hard work and dedication of everyone in that town.

4. That there is a world outside of that small town. That their lives can grow and they can acheive more than just a winning team. They also learn to trust each other and themselves individually. The one son also learns to trust his father and he gains a lot of respect for his dad, as his dad gains respect for himself.

5. What makes this ending believeable is that we don't know if the star player WILL make the winning shot. We all know he can but will he do it? Everyone believes in him as he believes in himself but he also knows it might not happen. At that moment of the game they all put their faith in the fact that they have done the absolute best they could and they would be happy with whatever outcome that game had. They know that they don't have to prove anything to anyone because they've already done that with themselves. It's a very suspenseful movie. I always enjoy watching that movie.
The year that movie came out my school, Shoshoni High School went to the State 2A Football Championship with a much bigger Cheyenne Seton Catholic High School. That team had all the amenities that a high school team was allowed. Our team had nothing but the uniforms on their backs. They played outside in Cheyenne, Wyoming and there was a huge blizzard during the game. Shoshoni won that game by 3 touchdowns. That was in 1985. People still talk about that game to this day.
There is something to be said about small town, underdog high school teams. Those teams seem to have more heart.

Wait...so you want us to do your homework for you. Isn't it better, and more fun, for you to just watch the movie?

Ok, I'll give it a shot.

1. They are smaller, slower, and don't have their best player on the team.

2. Because the last coach all but destroyed the team and left.

3. Because in Indiana, basketball is god. It is also seen as one of the few tickets out of the small farm town.

4. They can achieve anything by believing in themselves and hard work.

5. Well, the movie was based on a factual Indiana high school team that went on to win State, right?

Did you even watch the movie?!?!?!?
