Alfred Hitchcock is probably one of the most influential film director, not only in the horror/thriller genre, but in film-making in general.
I love him too. And yes, I also agree that he is a genius when it comes to horror films!

I loved his half hour mysteries on TV. A woman beat her husband to death with a frozen leg of lamb, then cooked it and fed it to the detectives.

Oh the man was brilliant! Vertigo is near the top of my list as well, but I'd have to say my favorite is The Trouble With Harry.
North By Northwest and Dial M For Murder rank pretty high also.
Yes, he was a genius. His best movies are still more stylish and suspenseful than most thrillers today. There are some movies that borrow some of his sensibilities, especially a few by DePalma, but none can really compare.
My favourites are Vertigo and the relatively unpopular Shadow of a Doubt.
Hmm...well, whilst I dont know if he could have ever been trusted to discover the theory of relativity or gravity, he sure did know how to make a movie. I stand corrected - Hitchcock make FILMS - not movies.
So I guess he was a genius at entertainment and suspense.
He wasn't a genius, he just made really good movies.
