The movie was nothing like the book. The only thing they had in common was the title. In the end he was captured and was the monster for being the only human left on earth and then executed.
In the book some of the (vampires as they are called) are still very human. They trick him by sending a woman to get him off his guard. They end up kidnapping him and he fought them when it happened. He was then told that if he had not done that they would have let him live. the book ends with him in a cell about to die. It sucked too.
