That looked like a ship (off in the distance on the right). The Slusho company that the main character worked for found some chemical down on the ocean floor and started putting it in theirs drinks. Slusho's slogan is "you can't drink just six", so it must be good. From what i've heard, it sounds like the cloverfield monster grows when it consumes this substances and it gets addicted to it. It looked like it just started mutating and growing and it eventually just came after the people taking this substance away. For example, the tanker in the bay that exploded in the beginning was full of Slusho. And the only people that were eaten, had drank a Slusho.
It's the alien arriving on Earth.

What you see is the satellite "Chimpanz III" that the Japanese oil company TAGRUATO drops into the ocean. TAGRUATO owns SLUSHO and provides the main, addictive ingredient for SLUSHO. After they retrieved the satellite, somehow they woke/created the Cloverfield monster. See, the main ingredient of Slusho apparently turns a tiny fish into a HUGE whale, which explains the size of Cloverfield. Rob was apparently going to Japan to be the Vice President of TAGRUATO.
