As much as I can appreciate what Tyler Perry is trying to do...I must say I have!

Question: ...movies and plays

my question is...why does Tyler Perry never portray the African American community (mostly Christian community) in a positive light?...I'm not saying the reality of what he is writing about doesn't exist..(of course it does)....but it seems to be all he writes about...African Americans on drugs, stealing, cheating on their wives or husbands....I'm an African American and I can honestly say that his scope of the black community is VERY limited....can't Tyler Perry portray blacks in a more positive light?

I have to agree I have that same Issue with Tyler Perry....especially the black men in his movies they never look good....again I agree I'm not saying his movies aren't based on reality but it seems as if he is limiting his writings and the concerns of the black community to drugs, alcoholism, unfaithfulness....why I take that so personal is...my father, grandfathers and brothers are not in anyway like the men in his movies.... of course I have men like the men in his movie in my family...but thats not the impression I have of the black community....and dont tell me that it wouldnt sell....for 8 years the Cosby Show portrayed the African American Community in a positive light and it was always among the most watched TV shows

Because where is the drama in a happy positive movie?

I like his movies, they are usually entertaining the whole way through, but I do agree,he should replace some of the negative aspects(over-dramatic details)with someone doing the RIGHT thing.

But the husband in "Diary of a Mad Black Women" did make me angry. What a jerk!!

I think he deals with the elephant in the room, the very real issues that we face within and without the culture and this makes people uncomfortable. We complain that we don't want anyone to "air our dirty laundry" but how else can we come to grips with issues if we continue to try and gloss them over?Of course he talks about a segment of the community but we don't say anything when whites make films like The Godfather or shows like The Sopranos. Often the best way to open dialog is through humor and it's working. We're talking, aren't we?

i see your point but i gotta disagree...The role of Gabrielle Union and her friends in little girls, Tyler Perry's role as the lawyer, several characters in Why did i get Married were Black Professionals. They had personal problems but still.

TP movies are the least of our problemms. HAVE YOU SEEN FIRST SUNDAY? crap like that is something complain about.
