The government was trying to force certain issues.. culminating in the closing of a monumentally famous movie theater.. the generation was protesting the governments taking over of the arts.. The end implies that that the brother and sister cared more about having a cause (it wasn't so much the cause itself.. but the having OF one) than love or even friendship.. In some ways it is saying that this revolution was fueled by a generation of kids who followed others who had their own beliefs.. mob mentality won out..
Great movie.. (and if you watch the special features on the dvd you'll learn more about the time period)
