Of course it was said...but they needed you to believe that Will Smith needed someone else in his life...and surprise, two people show up! In the original story the interaction with the dog is rather different. I've been bitten by a couple of german shepherds so I got over that one OK. :)
It was a plot tool used to show how alone and desperate Dr. Neville would be, he lost his only friend..Samantha. He was utterly alone, so he tried to kill himself on the pier.
It was awful and hard to watch...but that's the point of the story.
I am mad at how you ruined the movie for me. Thank you very much.
