What did BenAffleck do in Paycheck to stop the subway train??!

Question: What did he do with safety pin in the small circuit box that caused some electricity glitch(no correct words to describe) that stopped the train?

Can anybody explain how to do that?

I watched that a few days ago and I assumed he just caused a short circuit with the pin to shut off the electricity to the tracks or redirected the current which stopped the train. He also pulled out alot of wires and stuff.
