Why are there opening credits on a movie?!

Question: What is the point of showing all the names of the people in the movie at the beginning of a movie (the opening credits) if they are then shown again at the end?? This is crazy and takes up so much valuable time!

Generally, it's a contractual requirement, and it's done so those people can get some name recognition. The director, producers and other deal-makers, along with the writers, principal actors, and other major contributors get to have their names in the opening credits so you'll know who they are. Aside from the director, whose name always goes last, it's a matter of sometimes contentious negotiation which name goes where. The closing credits will list practically everybody involved in the movie, except extras and other day labor, but not many people stick around for those.

Because if the movie is terrible and you decide to walk out you can make sure you don't see any movies with those actors.

The reason credits are shown in the beginning and ending of a movie is actually for payroll purposes...really weird way of doing it but ya that's why they even show credits.

TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION I'LL ASK YOU A QUESTION .
WHEN YOU MEET SOMEONE FOR THE FIRST TIME DO YOU WAIT TILL YOU ARE READY TO LEAVE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF???

its advertising....because its most likely that people see the credits in the beginning that sits through the credits at the end.

injanier answered it best. I'll just add that George Lucas received criticism for Star Wars not having opening credits., which was more unusual at that time.
