Why are understanding patterns important to understanding movies?!

Question: Understanding patterns is important period. I was an English major in college and analyzing was a very important part of most of the work/assignments related to that major. Patterns are everywhere, books/movies/music etc., you have to be able to pick up references to patterns, what they mean etc. Patterns usually point to the larger point in movies, for example. Sure one can simply enjoy a movie or book for the pleasure it brings but the author knowingly or not has placed a framework that allows us to delve deeper into what the movie/book may mean. A pattern can point to how that movie/book will end or it can do something far more complicated: use certain images that have historical/social/cultural implications that add yet another level to the story being told. Understanding patterns requires a lot of studying classic works. Focus on a certain genre...Western movies for example and you will begin to see similarites throughout all of these you watch. They are all different stories but at the same time each are link to each other through themes/images/history. It sounds far more complicated than it actually is.
