Nothing really, I suppose people just prefer having the 2 bars on the top and bottom, for me, I don't care.

With the widescreen format, you can see more of the shot than you can with the standard format.

In essence, you are seeing more of what the camera saw and what the actors saw.

you can see more then if you just had full screen, and if you have a widescreen TV and watch a dvd in full screen some of the picture will be cut off on the sides.

the best examples i saw of there were peter jackson talking about the origional lord of the rings movie,

when the fellowship go under ground they were supposed to be in this huge and glorious hall of the once great dwarvin mines, in the full screen version it just looks like a cave
but in the wide screen version you really get a feel of the desolation of this great and ruined hall

If you have a wide screen 16:9 TV or projector you get the most out of it. Mostly for movie buffs. I like it, it brings the theater feel home and like it's been said you can see more of the shot if it was recorded in that format.

Widescreen is as the director/producer intended it to be seen, with the full image as it was in the theater. Fullscreen, otherwise known as pan and scan, requires an editor to choose what you see and may change how the scenes feel. A good example that is often used is a scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The scene is where Indy and his father are basically having a discussion face to face. In the widescreen version, you see them looking at each other while talking and you get a better sense that they are right next to each other, whereas the 'pan and scan' version shows one, then the other and keeps cutting back and forth, giving more of a feeling of isolation between the two characters and basically shows less interplay, including losing the facial reactions from each as the other is speaking.
Hope that helps you to understand why some prefer the widescreen format. It is the more complete movie.

Full screen fills the screen on your TV, but it chops the ends of the picture off. Wide screen show the whole movie like it was intended to be seen, but has the black bars at the top and bottom of your TV.

With widescreen you get to see the way the director had it shown in movie theaters. With "Full Screen" or pan and scan, you often only get only 50% of the original movie. You are often missing chracters, special effects etc with "Full Screen". A lot of movies,TV ads and TV series are now being filmed in widescren. Odds are in a few years time, full screen DVD will be gone with the new TV on Widescreen. The links below can better explain this to you.If you are a movie buff, then you will want your movies in Widescreen , just like you saw the movie in the movie theater.
