It was a hit by one of the rival families. (They were five of them). Micheal killed the cop and that other guy who tried to kill the "Don" so it was kinda like "I'm getting you back" thing. Like most mafia movies it's all about buisness and territory. I can't remember the name of the people who killed Sonny but at the end of the movie, Micheal asks Connie's husband(who was also involved in the murder of Sonny) who it was and he tells him the name.
