Was the Disney Movie Mulan based after a true story?!

I don't know if it's based off of a true story, but I do know that the legend was told repeatedly. :]

The Fa Family can't really be found anywhere in China. They're like legends and if you ask anyone in China they'll say the Fas came from their family. (Which is probably a lie, it's like saying Angelina Jolie is my sister (lie). I think they're revered or something but I'm pretty sure the Disney Mulan movie isn't a true representation of wherever they got it from. ...Whether its a poem, story, book, or legend.
