The movie intertwines three seperate, but similar stories - one each from the past, present, and future - about men in pursuit of eternity with their love.
1) A conquistador in Mayan country searches for the tree of life to free his captive queen
2) A medical researcher, working with various trees, looks for a cure that will save his dying wife
3) A space traveler, traveling with an aged tree encapsulated within a bubble, moves toward a dying star that's wrapped in a nebula; he seeks eternity with his love.
The stories intersect and parallel; the quests all fail and succeed.
It is an extremely complicated and layered story. The weaving of three parrallel storylines, each starring the same 2 actors (Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman) are very interesting but can at times be confusing.
It is a very confusing film and could require a few viewings in order to grasp it fully or at least satisfactorily. It is full od symbolism and hidden meanings difficult to catch after just one viewing. I have seen it three times and I am still pretty confused at times. This caused many people not to like it and turned them off. I love Rachel Weisz and enjoyed her greatly in the film. I dont typically care much for Hugh Jackman but I didnt mind him in this film at all. Darren Aronofsky is a terrific writer/director ("Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream" are amazing) and I would watch any of his movies just out of respect and enjoyment of his previous work.
Having said that, the movie really is brilliant in many ways. It is definetley one of the most visually impressive movies I have ever seen. I do recommend that you watch it, but only if you like these types of movies or like watching movies multiple times. Dont completely judge it solely upon just one viewing. If you like it the first time, then definetely take the time to see it again and you will like it even more!

YES!!
First of all, it was directed by acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky. The film is beautiful and its themes only add to the beauty of it all. Though most critics hated the film, I think any film lover would...love it.
Plot:
The Fountain takes place in three interweaving narratives that encompass the age of the Spanish conquistadors, the near-future period and a journey through deep space in an ecospheric starship.
Lots of plots are tyed into the story.
It is visually quite beautiful, but no, unfortunately it doesn't make much sense. As near as I can figure out, it's about the value of life and love, and the importance of experiencing both fully. Or not. Mindf*** is a good adjective.
