How early are movie trailers released before the actual movie comes out?!

I audit movie trailers and some come out more than a year before the movie is released. The companies determine what the response of the audience is to see if they need to revamp the trailer or rename the movie.

but if you go to cinemas sometimes they show ones that are months away

I remember seeing the Simpson's Movie trailer a year and a half before it came out!!
