Why did they make sweeney todd a musical? why not just a straight horror movie. !

Question: The first few previews I saw didn't have singing so I never thought it was a musical. I really wanted to see the movie. Then I found out it was a musical - I hate musicals. Why can't they just say the lines - there is no need for all that singing

Because the Original Sweeney Todd movie was a musical.

The Johnny Depp version is a remake.

because it's a musical from the 70's that they re-made...

It's from the stage - adapted for film.
And you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I think you're in the minority.

Like the others said, the source material is a musical (for stage), by Sondheim. There are versions of Sweeney Todd that aren’t musicals. I think there is a BBC (?) version with Ray Winstone, if you are interested in seeing that.

I’m very surprised that people saw this movie without knowing it was a musical. At least one trailer had singing in it, and when we went to the cinema, the ticket-takers all said: “That’s two to see Sweeney Todd THE MUSICAL?” Too bad not all theatres did that.

As for me, the movie had tons of things I love (Depp, Rickman, Burton, singing, revenge) but still didn’t live up to expectations.

Off-topic, but I don’t get why people are so turned off by musicals. Kind of like how people are so annoyed with subtitles. Not saying that your opinion isn't valid; I just don't get it.

Umm, they did advertise it as a musical - or did you miss Johnny Depp singing in the commericals?

It has ALWAYS been a musical - look it up. It's been a major theatrical musical for decades.

Sweeney Todd is a Broadway musical from 1979, written by Stephen Sondhiem... for the stage, not the theater. Without the music, I don't think the story would have nearly as much emotion and meaning; the lyrics and the individual voices of the actors contribute a lot to the film itself.

Because obviously the person who made it cant right a script for ****. When i payed 12 bucks to see the movie i was pissed to find out it was a musical. That is the worst movie i've ever seen.
