How were movies made during the Studio System?!

Question: Actors, writers, and directors worked for the studio, under contract. They were told which movies to make, as opposed to choosing for themselves. The producers ran the show and dictated the style of the film. The director was merely a hired gun brought in to carry out orders.

The best directors were able to circumvent this and put their own personal stamp on a picture. It wasn't until the 60's "auteur" theory came around that directors started to take control of the films.
