How does the concept of plot differ from the story?!

Question: A story is only a story if at least one event takes place.
And a plot is the way a story takes place,i.e., how does it takes place. For example:
The king died and then the queen died (story).
The king died and then the queen died of grief (plot).

The basic difference between story and plot was pointed out by Aristotle, who distinguishes between actions in the real world and units that are selected from these and arranged .

story is what happens, plot is the sequence of events you see onscreen. story is the whole thing, plot is only what you see

Hmmm. It's funny how often I ask that myself, and I'm a film student which makes things embarrassing. But here's my understanding...

To quote Bob McKee:

"A story is one huge master of events...a series of acts that build to a last act climax... that brings about irreversible change."

"Plot is the writer's choice of events, and their design in time."

What I've gathered from this is that the STORY is what happens. the events that happen. the prince was turned into an ugly frog by an evil witch. he lives as such for 500 years. eventually a princess kisses him and he turns into a prince.

the PLOT is the way the elements of story is arranged, designed, or told. all we know from the frog prince is that a princess kisses him one day, and he magically turns into a prince. he then proceeds to tell her about his tragic tale. we don't know about his backstory beforehand although it was chronologically precedent. This is because the PLOT of the story dictates that we only discover that after we discover that the frog was actually a prince.

quite simply, the plot frames the story.

Plot is the general idea what will happen, story is how it is played out. Watch the movie "Run Lola Run", absolute perfect example of this.
