Why do some people get their knickers in a twist because a movie is not 100% his!

Question: If you want accuracy, watch a documentary rather than sitting in a movie theater. Then again even the History Channel doesn't always give a completely accurate look at certain topics and people. It's entertainment, there are obviously going to be artistic licenses taken since maybe there aren't enough known details or a person's life/story isn't quite interesting enough so things are tweaked to make them entertaining. Why do people get upset over that?

Because they are either mental, have no life, or are obsessive-compulsive.

Seriously. Entertaining movies aren't about being accurate: they're about just that, being entertaining.

Because there's a big difference between being historically in-accurate and LAZY writing.

Take for example 10,000 B.C. They could have easily avoided A LOT of the problems with that movie if they had just said that the movie takes place on a different planet similar to Earth instead of trying to pretend it is Earth.

There. Simple and a very easy fix. And it's still all fiction, so no fuss, no muss.

You CAN have entertaining movies that take liberties with history as long as the changes make sense.

But as soon as you start making wide, sweeping changes then all the people who have had a decent grade school education will know its wrong and it takes them right out of the enjoyment of the film.

You also can't have scenes that are SO ludicrous that make the audience roll their eyes and constantly point out mistakes of the film instead of just watching and enjoying it.

You can also have movies that are intentionally inaccurate like Monty Python's Holy Grail, versus movies like National Treasure or 10K B.C.

And considering the state of education nowadays people do NOT need to be dumbed down any further. Unless of course you're the type of person who likes these kind of movies because you ARE dumb.

Just my two cents.

2 reasons.

First, because sometimes (not always) changing the details changes the story.

For example, Fat Man and Little Boy is about the making of the atomic bomb in the US during WWII. In particular, it's a look at scientist Oppenheimer and his relationship with General Groves who oversaw the project. The movie becomes about military oppression, oversecurity, and hypocrisy as well as communist witchhunts. Oppenheimer is portrayed as a brilliant, freethinking scientist falsely accused, manipulated, and tormented by the evil military mastermind Groves.

In truth, Oppenheimer sold the nuclear bomb to the USSR. The military had every right to be concerned about his personal beliefs and politicals beliefs.

Also, what about that factual travesty American Gangster? The movie becomes about corrupt cops when in truth no cop was EVER investigated or indicted in connection with those events. It's so factually incorrect, the policemen involved are suing for slander. Wouldn't you care if someone deliberately and carelessly drug your name through the mud to fit their own preconceptions?

By not being historically accurate, the story is completely wrong. Why even bother telling the story as if it's based on a true story? It isn't. It would be professionally more honest to make up a story than twist a real story to fit your own personal agenda.

Second, movies do shape peoples beliefs and decisions. Like above, people have, I'm sure, used the above movies to support their opinions about unfair treatment of suspected communists or police corruption. And their facts are from a movie. Like it or not, people do get a lot of information from movies. I don't think that makes them lazy. Most people don't have time to run down and fact check every thing they see. They have a life.
