Patch Adams might be a good movie for you. It is not a totally funny movie, it has some really serious parts in it. It is, however, based on a true life situation. The clinic for the poor that is part of the movie is still in operation with a waiting list of doctors that want to work there.
Older movies you might want to consider would be "Flubber", and "Son of Flubber". Both are Walt Disney movies. Any of the older Walt Disney movies will run the gamut of laughter, tears and a thrill of success as the protagonist wins over the opposition.
