raging bull and taxi driver are two of the best character driven movies ever. they have little plot, they just explore these characters psyches and pick them apart. it is very emotional because of that. also, fight club is one of the deepest character studies ever, the film has so many layers to it it is astonishing

Casablanca. Best movie ever! I've seen it at least a dozen times and still love it. The story has so many twists and turns and the characters are all so interesting. If you haven't seen it, you must!!

Ok, You said don't be shy....Debbie does Dallas?

recent ones include Mystic River, 3:10 to Yuma, Michael Clayton (though there is a brief explosion in it!), Taxi Driver, The Godfather, and my favourite recent one is There Will Be Blood.

There will be Blood hinges on the performance and believability of one man, Daniel Day Lewis. He transforms this man into a raging, snarling beast. It is quite extraordinary, and by the time he has hooked you in on his performance, you don't even know that he is despicable anymore. This is a film that goes for 2 1/2 hours and you dont he is on screen for all but about 1 minute of that. Simply extraordinary!

I know people go on about it but The Shawshank Redemption.
Also Scarface, Training Day, Trainspotting, The Madness of King George, White Heat(James Cagney) Donnie Brasco, and Momento came to mind. There's lots if you think about it, and all great for different reasons; some plot-lines give the audience chance to empathise with the character (Shawshank) some to show a downward spiral of self destruction (Scarface) some to chronical events.

The magnificent seven, The committments,Still crazy The birdcage but best of all Brassed off. It epitomises the word poignant. And it has some of the finest acting you'll ever see plus some great music .By the time it has finished it always leaves me feeling WOW!!!!!!!!

Anything by Scorsese... it should be both easy to find one you have seen and know about as well as interest and be familiar to the marker of the thesis you are doing.
