I agree with Insha but, his oscar was for his role as Ben Hur, in 1959.
There were so very many great roles.
Personally I liked him as Michelangelo in "The Agony and the Ecstasy."
As Ben Hur and Moses he seemed too ... dedicated to the roles. I can't point my finger to any one thing, but he seemed so self-righteous, so certain.
As Michelangelo he seemed somehow to be more frail, more human. He had doubts. He had weaknesses.
I think every film he starred in was the best film ever as he was the best actor of that generation. R.I.P Charlton Heston

Oh my goodness - I was about to write in response to stard5st that Charlton heston is still alive - when I decided to check online papers first.
In terms of best performance, I am tempted to say his interview in Michael Moore's Bowling for Colombine, or maybe his cameo as the Good Actor in Wayne's World 2. But I am going to go for his courageous performance in Touch of Evil as Mexican Vargas. Great, great film from a great, great actor.
