Question: I know the Emporer Commodus and several of the other characters were based on real persons,even if they weren't exactly historically correct with the facts.What I'd like to know was was Russell Crowe's character based on a real person.Anybody know?

I know I read up on this somewhere, and I think he was.

In the original drafts of the script, the name of the main character was not "Maximus" but "Narcissus" the name of the man who killed Commodus in real life.
