I agree with Amp Ajeen; Dog Day Afternoon isn't a well remembered movie and it wasn't that popular when it was playing theaters back during the bicentennial, but it has a much more compelling performance by Pacino than either the Godfather or Scarface, and the role is complex and difficult because it walks a thin line between dark comedy and the true crime genre. Pacino had the good fortune to have John Czale as support, and the two worked very well together (much better than they did in any of the trilogy of Godfather films) and a strong ensemble cast plays hostages, police, and the news media in this tale of a bank robbery gone very wrong, but it is Pacino who has the task of providing a strong center for the film and keeping things from falling apart. I don't particularly like Pacino's acting style nor his usual choice of roles, but Dog Day Afternoon is one of favorite films and I can't think of any other actor who could have played the role of Sonny better than Pacino.
If you have never seen Dog Day Afternoon, I recommend trying to find a rental copy, if possible, or if the film turns up on television go out of your way, if you have to, to watch it. You won't see many movies that are more entertaining and very few that are as good. For my money, Pacino has never been as good, before or after.
My fav Pacino performance is Dog Day Afternoon. REally interesting movie too since it was based on a true story.

The Godfather. I just could not get past his horrible spanish accent and over-acting in Scarface.
