Why has CGI gone so downhill?!
Question: In films like Lost in Space and LOTR, it was great. Then you had films like the Beowulf ripoff that was entirely CGI and looked like a bad cartoon rather than what CGI used to be. What went wrong that the quality went straight drain rather than improving with time?

I think it depends upon the budget and talent of the special effects staff. Some movies look good and others, like you said, look like cartoons. Perhaps they paid so much to the actors in that movie that there was little left to pay for good CGI.
maybe they should use it just once for a remake that is 20 years in the making..
