Why green?!

Question: When changing the background in a movie, they usually shoot the scene with a green wall behind the actor, let's say they wanted him to be flying, they take a shot of him pretending to fly with a green wall behind him, then they remove the green and put the sky and clouds and stuff, so my question is, why green? why not white or black? and if an actor was wearing a green shirt, wouldn't this make his shirt look invisible? or am I getting this whole thing wrong? what do they call it all anyway?

They are essentially the same thing. They're both neutral color backgrounds that are used to shoot action on and then overlay backgrounds over in postproduction, using chromakey. The reason that blue and green are commonly used for this is that they contrast well against skin tones. That is, skin tones are unlikely to blend with the background color, and get pulled out via chromakey.

Why use blue instead of green, or vice versa? Usually it doesn't matter, but sometimes the subject your shooting will have a shade of one of the colors, so the other is used for contrast. For example, in the Superman movies, Superman's costume is primarily blue, so to contrast him from the background, he is shot in front of a green screen.

BTW, blue and green screen work isn't limited to big time Hollywood movies. I shot the commercial below using green screen on a budget of about $10-$15...
