It depends on both the theatre and the movie. Sometimes for a high-profile movie they'll sell tickets to the first showing weeks in advance, but not all theatres do that, and of course it doesn't happen for all movies. I think your best bet will be to call the theatre and ask them what options you have.

Here's an idea, though: If you're planning on seeing the movie at, say, 8:00 at night, you could drop by the theatre in the middle of the afternoon (if you're in school, go right after school), buy your ticket for the 8:00 showing, and come back for the movie at showtime. Buying a ticket for a showing later the same day is generally no problem at all.

You can buy them online or at the theater. Just go up and ask for it by the showing time. Im sure every place is different, but I would just go up an ask for advanced tickets. Where I am, I doubt that movie will sell out, but if your worried, go for it.

If you do buy them online, it usually costs more and you can use discounts (like student pricing).

There's a program called Fandango that lets you buy movie tix early. But I would go to the movie theatre ahead of time and ask the management or ticket salesperson if they could buy tickets early, because I am not sure if Fandango is online only.

You should be able to go to the theater today and get your tickets for this weekend.

If you don't want to do it online, you may have to call your theater to see if they accept over-the-phone bank transactions. The only other option is to actually go to the theater and pre-purchase the tickets.
