Some of the best European movies I have seen:
Burnt by the Sun (Russia)
Come and See (Russia)
Children of Paradise (France)
Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Germany)
The Seventh Seal (Sweden)
Europa, Europa (Germany/Poland)
The Boat is Full (Germany)
Yojimbo (Bodyguard) (Japan)
Farewell, My Concubine (China)
The Double Life of Veronique (France)
Angry Harvest (Germany)
Ali, Fear Eats the Soul (Germany)
Wild Strawberries (Sweden)

I'm thinking american vs Norwegian films since those are the once i see the most.. and I'm 100% for American movies. Maybe they make good movies in France, but I don't think Ive ever actually seen a French movie.

That's a pretty broad question. American movies, as we all know, are hit-or-miss and tend to rely on the same tried and true formulas. However, Europeans (namely Italians) have a long track record of ripping off big box office franchises from or popularized by the States (Godfather, 007, Jaws, Dirty Harry, Love Story, Exorcist, Star Wars, etc.). But some have a certain "feel" to them that is different than the usual lowest common denominator stuff without going into artsy-fartsy avant garde territory. I guess it depends what you're in the mood for and how hard you look.

I have seen various european films, but with few exceptions, I don't like them, as they are either very heavy or very depressing. But maybe that's just the ones that they show here in the United States.

So generally, I prefer Hollywood films [although I did enjoy Ciao Profesore, Unbearable Lightness of Being, and the original version of Auberge espagnole (the version I saw in the movie theater in france was better; the american DVD version is slightly modified).]
