In the movie, Jenny indicates that she has an untreatable "virus"--the AIDS virus (HIV)--which appeared in the United States in the early 1980s. AIDS was first reported here June 5, 1981, to be exact.

It could possibly be aids. The seventies was the begining of aids cases if u look online. Most people just were not yet aware because it had not reached epidemic preportions yet.

I believe that she had AIDS. That part of the story took place in the early 80s, right before there was a name for the disease. Jenny says that she has a virus that the doctors don't even have a name for.

Jenny's character was an early victim of AIDS due to her drug use. In the film her character died in 1982, a years after the real world began to hear of this disease. I remember first hearing of it on the TV news when my son was 2 months old in 1981. Early victims of this disease, still called a virus today, died quickly.
