At first, I thought of "A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon" (1988), starring River Phoenix.
I also thought of "Mystery Date", but that's in 1991.
IMDB synopsis:
Tom McHugh (Ethan Hawke) is a fine teen boy who secretly dreamed of making a move at the neighbor's sexy, a bit older house-sitter Geena Matthews (Teri Polo), but never dared to do anything. The only movie I can remember like this is the really bad movie Blind Date, starring Bruce WIllis, Kim Basinger, and John Larroquette. Bruce Willis goes out with Kim Basinger, and everything that can go wrong does go wrong.
I just don't remember if there's a part with a burrito, however.

...I, myself, immediately thought of "Mystery Date", at first; then, I happened to remember a pre-'Bill & Ted' film, which actor Keanu Reeves did, entitled "The Night Before", from 1988. Might this be the one that you're looking for??? It has very much a similar plot, as what you describe, yet amazingly enough, resembles "Mystery Date", in many respects; the exploding burrito DOES strike a familair cord, and I suspect that one of these films is right on the money...
