Question: He appears in sill movies because he is good at physical comedy. Some comedic actors can make the transition to drama well (Robin Williams) but I don't think Chevy can. He has done a few TV roles but I just can't take him seriously.

He appears in very silly movies because he's a comedian who makes money by doing comedies. I think he tried one semi-comedy-drama called Memoirs of the Invisible Man. It tanked at the box office.
I don't remember him ever doing anything serious, but he has always done funny so well. He delivers so well and can maintain a serious demeanor while doing comedy.
His bio on imdb says he prefers to do family oriented films and has turned down more serious roles including American Beauty.
