Bookend

i call it a tarranteno or however u spell the director of pulp fictions name...but the technique specifically....idk

It may be considered a flashback, or a retrospective.

"Flashback" would be the correct term for this. If the end comes back around to where it started, especially if there are dissolves back to the present, it's a framework device.

A framework also can be used in a different way. "The Bridges of Madison County" is one in which the man and woman reading the letters leads to a flashback to their mother and the photographer. Throughout the film, we're brought back to the present for a while, sort of a bridging device.

The original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" starts with the end of the story then goes into flashback. Then, we're brought back to the present for the wrapup.

There are actually 2 techniques that fit this criteria:

1. Reverse chronological order.

The WHOLE MOVIE is played backwards, i.e. the movie starts with the ending and it ends with the beginning.

Example: the movie "Irreversible".

2. Non-linear narrative.

Wherein events are portrayed out of chronological order, but not necessary backwards.

Example: the movie "Pulp Fiction".

Saving Private Ryan fits the second term since flashbacks are a type of a non-linear narrative.

ruined.!!
