Question: In horror and thriller films why do many characters make stupid choices!?
I'm a horror/ thriller film lover but stupid characters ruin good movies for me (they make the film unbelievable)!.
Do dumb characters drive good horror/ thrillers!?
I mean can't the killers or bad guys ever outsmart the victims, as
opposed to the victims doing irritating things like walking toward ghastly shapes/ sounds, or leaving weapons lying near the bad guy once they've knocked them down!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hey, I agree with you 100%! I think that characters make dumb choices, because they are in a panic, or written as is in one, and many don't kinow how to handle psycotic killers (Human or not)!. However, by adding dumb characters into a film, it allows the audiance to sympathize with the main character, and allow our emotions for them get bigger because they are the only one left alive!. If someone just came right out and killed the protagonist of the film, where would they go from there!? A good horror movie doesn't need its characters to make stupid decisions to excite the audience!. Take "The Others" for example!. It was a great movie! It kept you intrigued, and all of the characters seemed like intellegent people (Nicole Kidman) and tried to make the right decisions for the circumstances!. But I have to say, the movie "Vacancy," with Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson, is the best horror film I have seen in a long time!. They were human!. You could tell how they felt, and knew that the decisions that they tried to make would be analyzed (as quickly as possible) and carried through with as much dedication for the task as for keeping their lives!. It was superbly made!. It seemed so real!. Then again, it was ment to be a horror movie that could actually happen in real life!. Anyway, I agree with you on the subject of dumb characters!. i know! i end up having a sore throat at the end of a horror movie with the screaming i am doing at the charcaters XD!.!.they won't listen! when they get killed im like "i told ya"Www@Enter-QA@Com

it's a psychological ploy to get into your subconscious enough to make you remember the movie!. advertising in other words!. proof is your time to write your question!. plus it keeps the story going!. and if you had a guy with a chainsaw after you would you think straight!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

It is stupid! You'd think they'd make them more realistic!. It's like, they hear a knocking coming from their bedrooma dnthey are the only one's in the house, normal people would call the police or run away!. But NO, they have to go and see what it is!. Why do they always walk so slowly aswell!?! It is really annoying!Www@Enter-QA@Com

well, if they made sensible choices all of the time then there wouldn't be a film!
instead of camping near a lake frequested by serial killers they could easily book into a nice hotel and have a peaceful holiday - but then it would be a pretty boring horror film!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

And why is it when the bad guy catches the hero, he always has to monologue about how clever he is and reveal his sinister plan!. Then the hero escapes and foils the plan!. Why doesn't the bad guy just kill him when he has the chance!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

I love horror and thriller movies more than anyone I know!.
I do think that some movies need some stupid/ignorant characters, because no one in these movies would be thinking straight!. But some of them are exceptionally dumb, plus they should be in survival mode!!
Plus I think the villain needs to be intelligent, menacing and psychopathic!.
